Frequently asked questions

Below is a list of frequently asked questions we get asked the most. Click on any of the questions to expand the section and see the answer. If your question is not shown, please don’t hesitate to contact us with any enquiries.

What can I expect during the first session?2026-04-13T06:32:27+00:00

During the initial counselling session, it is important to be genuine so that Jeff, the treating counsellor, can accurately understand your history and background. Jeff recognises that clients may experience heightened emotions and acknowledges that meeting for the first time can be challenging. Many clients report that, upon completing their session, the experience was more positive than they anticipated and that the conversation felt comfortable and supportive.

Clients frequently experience increasing anxiety as their counselling sessions approach; a phenomenon therapists refer to as “Punitive Parenting Mode.” This term describes the internal critical voice that may manifest in thoughts such as, “This is unnecessary; I don’t need therapy,” or “Others have more serious problems than I do—seeking therapy is a sign of weakness. What might my family or friends think about me attending therapy?” Jeff recognises these challenges and is dedicated to fostering a comfortable, safe, and supportive environment for all individuals.
Is it common to be nervous and anxious?2025-04-25T04:54:34+00:00

It is quite common to experience nervousness and anxiety, particularly if you have not engaged in counselling previously. As an experienced mental health and relationship counsellor, I am fully aware of the mixed emotions that may arise. Therefore, I place significant emphasis on sincerity and maintaining a down-to-earth approach in my practice. I acknowledge the potential difficulty in discussing your most private concerns or fears with a newly acquainted professional; hence, I always permit clients to advance at their own pace.

Please feel free to contact Jeff at 0448 803 784 for a complimentary 15-minute inquiry call to ensure you feel comfortable before scheduling a counselling session.

What forms of payment do I accept?2025-04-25T04:48:29+00:00

Soul Star Counselling accepts payment via bank transfer (at the client’s earliest convenience), EFTPOS (upon completion of the counselling session), or cash for counselling services. To facilitate smooth scheduling and reduce no-shows, a 50% prepayment of the counselling session fee is requested prior to the first appointment. For follow-up appointments, there is no advance payment requirement.

Can I get a Medicare rebate or Private Health insurance rebate?2025-04-25T04:50:30+00:00

Unfortunately, No.
Soul Star Counselling sessions do not qualify for Medicare rebates under the current legislation. Currently, we do not have Private Health partnerships for insurance rebates.
However, this means there is no limit on the number of appointments for the counselling service you can book with us, and you’ll experience limited waiting times when scheduling an appointment.

Do I need a referral?2025-10-29T13:49:35+00:00

It is not necessary to have a referral from a General Practitioner or any other practitioner to book a counselling session at Soul Star Counselling. Detailed and accurate client information is provided, which can be utilised if needed. To proceed with this request, verbal and written signed permission from the client will be required.

Customised Service Hours
Soul Star Counselling differentiates itself from other psychological and relationship counselling providers. Should the regular hours not accommodate your schedule, you are encouraged to contact Jeff directly to arrange an appointment at a mutually convenient date and time. Many clients have found that their preferred times, including those outside conventional business hours, are often accommodated upon request.

Can I be seen in an emergency?2025-04-25T04:45:23+00:00

Absolutely. If you are a woman, young person, or adolescent experiencing family and domestic violence (FDV) or have in the past, I will prioritise your case and expedite your counselling waiting period. Alternatively, we can schedule appointments after business hours, and if you are unavailable during the week, I also offer sessions on weekends. Soul Star Counselling’s business hours are notably flexible, allowing individuals, couples, and families a wide range of options to accommodate their needs.

How many counselling sessions would I need?2025-04-23T08:12:42+00:00

We are all unique individuals and that is exactly how you are cared for at Soul Star Counselling. Some individuals/ couples may advance more quickly than others, that doesn’t mean that you are more challenging individuals, it just means what you have, or are currently experiencing, has had a much more significant impact than others over an extended period of time, resulting in longer sessions. As we know, change doesn’t happen overnight, it takes time to effect change and generally 6 to 8 sessions are recommended.
With more complex counselling sessions for individuals, it is highly recommended that a limit should not be advised, rather on progress for the individual. Here at Soul Star Counselling, your psychological well-being is my highest priority. As for any lady that has been involved with FDV, I highly recommend that extended counselling sessions are considered.
